
In this paper, we revisit the definition of a contact in the context of deterministic delay-tolerant networks, based on the use case of a low earth orbit satellite network. A new approach to define contacts with capacity being the core characteristic is introduced. Using this definition, a concept to improve predictions of future contact capacities is presented, considering the observed signal quality. Finally, an evaluation with respect to prediction accuracy and routing performance is conducted using an event-based simulation toolchain.
