Markov modulated Poisson process model for hand-off calls in cellular systems

Abstract

The growth of telecommunication systems is more than ever stimulating the need for mathematical modeling and evaluation techniques to predict the performance of these systems. These techniques have become an indispensable tool for assessment of the performance of a system, evaluation of design alternatives, resource dimensioning, and system configuration. The Poisson distribution is a good representative for most telecommunication events. The hand-off calls in a cellular system have bursty characteristics which means they are happening with different rates. Therefore, there is a need for a model that is able to capture this specific behavior. In this paper, Markov modulated Poisson process (MMPP) is used to model the hand-off calls. Then, an analytical model of a cellular system is solved and the performance metrics are calculated. Finally, we compared our results with those obtained when considering only the Poisson model.
