Improper operations of UPFC can make power system lose its synchronism. This paper explores the principle of this stability problem, and a simple system with single UPFC is set up to demonstrate the existence of such stability problems. An algorithm is proposed to determine whether a UPFC operation is stability constrained or not. An additional UPFC operational constraint is also proposed. Possible extension of the algorithm to multimachine multi-UPFC system is studied.
