An insulated miniature coaxial probe with a modified geometry has been developed for EM local heating of a biological (or conducting) medium. This probe is basically a lossy coaxial cavity, and its input impedance, current distribution, and power dissipation pattern can be controlled by the selection of terminal impedances, insulating sheath, and the dimensions of the probe. An approximate theory and an experimental study on the probe are presented.
