Intelligent highway safety markers are only the beginning for truly intelligent highway systems and for applications of robotics in transportation. Our research has demonstrated a robot's ability to act as a smart safety barrel guiding traffic and serving as a visible barrier between traffic and work crews. Through GPS, geographic information systems, wireless communication, and advanced vehicular electronic systems, we drive with greater safety along with various smart mobile robotic devices that warn us about safety hazards and even clean road debris.
