The following manuscript studies the benefits and weaknesses of using beamforming for beaconing in a vehicle to vehicle communication scenario following the specifications of the IEEE 802.11p standard. This is done through a simulation in which the performance of a uniform linear array of two isotropic antennas is compared to an isotropic antenna with the same power in a two lane intercity highway. The use of beamforming results in an increase in the collisions in the network, but this is compensated through a larger number of vehicles being reached in the network. Therefore, more re-transmissions are possible in case of a collision, and a lower probability of losing information is expected, which results in more reliable communications.
