A new fault location algorithm for distribution network is proposed based on the wide-area synchronizing information. The algorithm is based on the distributed parameters model in the small current neutral grounding system, and constructed a fault location function according to the relationships between the fault current and fault distance, which fully utilizes synchronized samples of currents and voltages from the two ends of a line. If assumed fault distance, a corresponding fault current can be obtained. And the maximum fault current can be obtained using the iterative search algorithm along the whole line, the distance corresponding to the maximum fault current is the actual fault distance. Simulation results show that the algorithm is reliable and accurate and can be extended for other types of faults.
