This paper investigates a DC solid state transformer (DCSST) with DC fault ride-through (FRT) capability for medium voltage DC (MVDC) systems. The ability of short circuit fault clearance on the medium voltage (MV) side can be promoted with a suitable control scheme by introducing one or several full bridge converters to the cascaded DC converter modules on the MV side of the DCSST. The fault ride-through strategy under voltage sag is analyzed. The low power hardware setup with two modules is used to verify the protection concept.
