Due to a few realistic challenges (e.g. lack of protocol support, limitation of NAT and firewall, etc), it is difficult to access residential multimedia services from heterogeneous network environment. In this paper, we propose a system architecture for accessing residential multimedia services from either local or remote networks. The proposed solution includes UPnP-based local multimedia access, Cloud-based remote multimedia access, and a few corresponding technical approaches (for instance, security, NAT traversal, etc) are also considered. The prototype implementation and evaluation shows feasibility and efficiency of proposed solution.
