
Head-and-chest resonance is a concept often mentioned in vocal pedagogy. For a long time, the grasp of the characteristics of head voice and chest voice highly rely on personal feeling, which is also due to the scarcity of research windows. With a contact microphone directly capturing the speech signal transmitted from laryngeal to the body surface, the resonance characteristics of the head and chest can be approximated. This study found that different points in the head and chest have different resonance characteristics over different pitches, vowels and in between modal register and falsetto register. While in general, the head and the chest can be clearly distinguished by the resonance characteristics. The head has a higher response to high(close) vowels, and the chest has a higher response to low(open) vowels, which has a strong correlation with the first formant of the vowel.
