Flexible Hardware Implementation of Universal Filtered Multi-Carrier Systems

Abstract

Flexibly supporting multiple services, each having different frame structure with unique requirements for the communication has been identified as one of the most important and promising characteristics of the next generation and beyond wireless communication system. With the entry of machine type communication (MTC) in 5th generation wireless technology the researchers are keen to find the derivate of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), filter bank multi carrier (FBMC) and universal filter multicarrier (UFMC), these techniques are under study with respective their fittingness with 5G requirement. In addition to satisfactory performance investigation on computational complexity reduction can support in selecting among different candidate waveforms for 5G. Recently a low complexity solution is designed for UFMC complexity reduction implementations without compromising the performance, based on it our simplified solution has shown that computations can be further reduced in Invers fast Fourier transform (IFFT) operations, while keeping flexibility into consideration. Hardware architecture for flexible and simplified IFFT (generic IFFT for 64,128,256,512 and 1024 points) computation block of UFMC keeping LTE carrier allocation has been proposed. Software model as reference for hardware descriptive model is created and finally IFFT is implemented on FPGA and showed the complexity comparisons.
