Interoperable Telepresence Services: Beyond HD-Videoconferences and Towards Telepresence

Abstract

Telepresence service provides immersive and realistic presence experience to users. Even though telepresence service is no longer new terminology any more, it has not been widely deployed to users. There are several vendors that provide telepresence devices, but they do not interoperate each other because they implemented advanced feature with their own way. Hence, two major SDOs are under standardization. Besides of standardization, for the diffusion of telepresence service, there should be some strategy such as interoperation with legacy terminals. In this paper, we briefly summarize characteristics of telepresence and standardization activities and introduce a diffusion strategy model.
