The performance of synchronous machines operating with armature windings unbalanced by having coils cut out following winding failure is considered. The resulting unbalanced voltages and currents tend to produce overheating and may produce magnetic pull-over or excessive vibration. A method of calculating winding currents and voltages in unbalanced windings is presented. The conditions for winding modification schemes to control magnetic pull-over and severe vibration are discussed. This analysis is also applicable to polyphase induction motors. >
