A multichannel data acquisition interface module, called the AIM, in which the bus connection to the rest of the instrument's components is achieved by an Ethernet network, is described. The design goals for AIM, the communication protocol, the module firmware and microcode, the host system software, and the performance of AIM are discussed. Areas where enhancement to the AIM and its controlling software would be possible are identified. >
