SCUFFING AND WEAR OF VALVE GEAR

Abstract

REPORTS FROM THE U.S.A. recently have referred quite frequently to scuffing and wear of valve gear, and it would therefore seem that this trouble has been more prevalent of late than it used to be. This may be due to increased engine loading, the use of additive-containing lubricating oils, or changes in engine design. A recent paper (to the SAE Golden Anniversary Meeting at Detroit, March 1-3, 1955) by Etchells, Thomson, Robinson and Malone, all of General Motors Corporation, describes a simple accelerated bench test which assesses the effects of cam and tappet design, lubrication and metallurgy, and some interesting facts were reported concerning lubrication.
