RECENT articles in this series have dealt with methods of applying bearing lubricants and so far we have covered simple type oilers and ring oilers. We might now consider the simple methods of applying grease to plain bearings. In using the word “simple” we refer mainly to manual methods and probably the most popular and best known method here is the grease nipple. The number of grease nipples manufactured for use on new machinery runs into millions per annum and almost every machine produced needs from one to several hundred. Motor car chassis lubrication is nearly always by means of the grease nipple and grease gun. Power operated grease guns are employed where there are large numbers of nipples to lubricate, as for example, in garages.
