May I begin by expressing my warm appreciation, first to Aslib for inviting me to this adventure, then to my Director General for encouraging me to accept it, and, finally, to my staff for helping me so much to prepare for it. For a chemist to address an Aslib conference on planning libraries is, indeed, nothing less than impudent! I learnt at an early age that most excursions in impudence are adventures.
