This article is about what has been described as the aristocracy of the engineering profession: design engineers. I hope, before I continue, that I have no readers for whom the term engineer has connotations of greasy spanners. The professional design engineer is a highly technically qualified, literate, numerate and creative individual, as will emerge from what follows. Spanners do not enter into it, greasy or otherwise.
