This paper describes the first observation of supercontinua from gaseous media. The supercontinuum was generated at pressures as low as 1 atm from Xe and with input power as low as 5 µJ in 40 atm Xe and 25 µJ in 40 atm CO2. Continua were produced in the rare gases, Ar, Kr and Xe and molecular gases, H2, CO2 and N2. Within the parameter range of our experiment, we see no evidence of continuum generation in Ne. This is the only gas that we have investigated in which continuum generation was absent.
