The interaction of two-dimensional quantum gravity with a set of conformal matter fields is considered. Following an earlier suggestion by Cates, we calculate the free energy of a spiky'' Liouville field configuration at a fixed value of the proper-time cutoff and including lowest-order quantum corrections. This free energy becomes arbitrarily large negative as soon as the central charge of the matter fields is larger than unity.
