The contribution of a P- and T-odd nucleon-nucleon force to the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the deuteron is discussed in view of recent proposals to detect macroscopic EDM in light nuclei (specifically $^{3}\mathrm{He}$). In the Kobayashi-Maskawa model of CP violation the EDM of the deuteron exceeds the EDM of the neutron by 2--3 orders of magnitude. Such an enhancement is not found in the contribution from the \ensuremath{\theta} term in the QCD Lagrangian.
