We consider the question what constitutes a good signature for the occurrence of an intermediate phase transition in a many-body system. In the context of a simple model for a temporary phase change exists in a finite system. We discuss the relevance of our result to the question of what constitutes an unambiguous signature for the formation of a quark-gluon plasma in relativistic nuclear collisions
