It is shown that the shape-anisotropy energy density of magnetic multilayers with cylindrical symmetry about the {ital z} axis normal to the film is {minus}2{pi}{ital M}{sub {ital s}}{sup 2}({ital z}{bar )} in the continuum limit, where {ital M}{sub {ital s}}{sup 2}({ital z}{bar )} is the average of the square of saturation magnetization {ital M}{sub {ital s}}({ital z}).
