Some recently developed methods of numerical analysis are used to improve the standard transfer-matrix analysis of Ising spin systems. The method is used to analyze some properties of the two-dimensional anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor interaction model. Discrepancies in some recent work with respect to the existence and position of a disorder line are resolved, and some new properties of the phase diagram are demonstrated. It is argued that the modified transfer-matrix method is capable of being more generally applied.
