Abstract: The multiphoton absorption mechanism of anharmonic molecular bonds in laser fields of high intensity is investigated. The time dependence of the absorbed energy as a function of field frequency is studied for a number of cases of varying anharmonicity and field strength. It is found that the short-time dynamics can be meaningfully described by an ''apparent detuning.'' The results obtained with a continuous-wave field are used for the design of Gaussian pulses.
