A Greens function is given for the canonical form of the thermodiffusion problem. The analytical and numerical solutions obtained for an initially homogeneous mixture reveal that the process at the boundaries is enhanced during the initial phase. This has to be related to the observations made by Tanner [Trans. Faraday Soc. 23, 75 (1927)] that the concentration change is extremely rapid at the boundaries. Impact on liquid-alloy crystallization is briefly analyzed. © 1990 The American Physical Society.
