A trial solution constructed from two-particle functions is applied to the problem of the $N$-particle system with strong interactions. In a variational treatment based on this wave function the expectation values, which cannot be factored into single-particle integrals, are evaluated by a cluster development in powers of the particle density. The procedure is illustrated by a calculation of the pair distribution function and zero-point energy of the hard sphere gas, for Bose and Fermi statistics.

| selected citations These citations are derived from selected sources. This is an alternative to the "Influence" indicator, which also reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | 974 | |
| popularity This indicator reflects the "current" impact/attention (the "hype") of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network. | Top 1% | |
| influence This indicator reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | Top 0.1% | |
| impulse This indicator reflects the initial momentum of an article directly after its publication, based on the underlying citation network. | Top 10% |
