Magnetic Properties of Neodymium Single Crystals

Abstract

Magnetic measurements have been made on single crystals of neodymium which were grown by the Bridgman technique. At 20.4\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}K and above, the susceptibility obtained with the field perpendicular to the ${c}_{0}$ axis of the hexagonal crystal is greater than that obtained with the field parallel to the ${c}_{0}$ axis. In this same temperature range no anisotropy is observed in the basal plane. At 4.2\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}K antiferromagnetic ordering is indicated by the data and magnetic anisotropy in the basal plane is observed.
