
Summary: The approach of Steuerwald-Lamb for obtaining exact solutions of the sine-Gordon equation is further developed through transformations by means of which complicated solutions of the corresponding ODEs are obtained without any explicit integration. Polynomial and non-polynomial transformations are discussed and several of them are used to obtain breather and soliton solutions of the sine-Gordon equation. The obtained solutions are discussed from the point of view of the electrodynamics of the long Josephson junction.
