The definition of nursing diagnosis is not universally agreed upon, so ambiguities exist about the nature and range of human responses that nurses diagnose and treat. Some of the social, economic, political, and professional issues that are influenced by a defintion of nursing diagnosis are analyzed in this paper. An argument in favor of a definition that encompasses the holistic nature of nursing and that addresses the criteria required of a concept that directs nursing practice, education, and research is presented.
