Fentanyl (Sublimaze) is a synthetic opioid used as a combination drug for conscious sedation in patients requiring endoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Fentanyl is generally used in place of meperidine (Demerol) in combination with droperidol (Inapsine) and midazolam (Versed), creating neuroleptanesthesia for patients undergoing procedures that require patient cooperation.
