Abstract The Magellanic Stream is reproduced numerically by taking account of the gravitational interaction of three galaxies, the Galaxy, and the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC). The masses are taken as 2.75 × 1011 M⊙ for the 2 × 1010 M⊙ for the LMC, and 2 × 109 M⊙ for the SMC. The best reproduction of the Stream is obtained as a narrow band of the particles pulled out from the LMC, whose orbital plane is perpendicular to our galactic plane and whose motion is clockwise as seen from the sun with the perigalacticon at 20 kpc. Our galactic sheet of test particles is not warped enough by the tidal force of the two Clouds to explain the observed bending of the galactic disk.
| selected citations These citations are derived from selected sources. This is an alternative to the "Influence" indicator, which also reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | 1 | |
| popularity This indicator reflects the "current" impact/attention (the "hype") of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network. | Average | |
| influence This indicator reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | Average | |
| impulse This indicator reflects the initial momentum of an article directly after its publication, based on the underlying citation network. | Average |
