The publication of previously little known ancient apocalyptic works, including the Ethiopic Book of Enoch or 1 Enoch, led to the scholarly rediscovery of apocalypticism in the nineteenth century. However, it took most of the nineteenth century before the full impact of the new perspective on Jewish apocalypticism on the interpretation of the New Testament could be felt. Apocalypticism provides the narratives and symbolic systems that inspired Jesus, John the Baptist, the apostle Paul, and the earliest community after Easter. This chapter explores the link between apocalypticism and the origins of Christianity.
