
Frederick Jackson Turner made the Census of 1890 famous when he used it to document the passing of the American frontier. Little noted is the fact that the same 1890 census produced a comprehensive survey of religion in America. Directed by H. K. Car roll, the survey "enumerated, classified, and described" the American religious community in all its diversity. In 1893 Carroll issued The Reli gious Forces of the United States that included an introduction about the "Condition and Character of American Christianity."
