THE WESTERN REACTION TO THE COUNCIL OF NICAEA II

Abstract

Cet article veut montrer que la reaction de l'Occident au deuxieme Concile de Nicee (787) a ete tres partagee. Une etude de ces reactions indique le grand potentiel d'incomprehension qui existait entre l'Eglise orientale et les Francs latins de la fin du VIIIe siecle et s'est cristalise par la condamnation franque du culte des icones aux synodes de Frankfort (794) et Paris (825). L'A. montre aussi que le pape Hadrien I a participe de maniere significative a ce debat pendant son pontificat (772-95) et surtout par sa contribution au Concile de Nicee II.
