
Field and packing house surveys were done to determine the infestation rates of oriental fruit fly, Dacus dorsalis Hendel, and melon fly, D. cucurbitae Coquillett, in papaya ( Carica papaya L. cv. Kapoho Solo) fruits with normal and defective blossomends. A normal blossom end is closed with a diameter of 1 mm), and navel (resembles blossomend of the navel orange). Result suggest that oriental fruit fly and melon fly normally oviposit in areas outside of the blossom end. Percentage infestation rate by oriental fruit fly in normal fruits and in those with a blossom end defect is the same for mature green to color-break fruits. Quarter- to fully ripe fruits with blossom end defect have a higher percentage infestation rate by oriental fruit fly than normal fruits. Numbers of eggs oviposited (as indicated by number of emerged adults) in normal, mature, green to color-break fruits is much less than those laid in normal, riper fruits. Numbers of eggs oviposited in normal and defective one-quarter to fully ripe fruits do not differ.
