A Tarif System for Loblolly Pine

Abstract

Abstract The volume/basal area line, as the basis of a tarif system for natural and planted stands of loblolly pine in North and South Carolina, Georgia, and north Florida, is discussed and shown to be inappropriate. A new method of developing tarif tables is presented, using a nonlinear volume-dbh function harmonized by mean stand height and stand dbh. Tarif equations are presented for total stem cubic foot volumes and green and dry weights, using dbh and tarif number, and accessed through an equation based on mean stand height and stand dbh. Merchantable volume and weight equations to various top diameter limits are derived for use with the tarif equations. The ability to estimate veneer and saw log volumes in three board foot units is added to the tarif equations to provide a comprehensive tarif system. Forest Sci. 31:95-108.
