Abstract Desirable properties of mating designs for evaluation of inbreeding depression are developed in the context of tree breeding plans. Benefits of organizing contrasts among inbreeding levels orthogonally to contrasts among general combining abilities of the mated relatives are illustrated by analysis of an example. A compact and convenient design with this property is described in detail. Forest Sci. 28:148-156.
