Abstract Net photosynthesis and transpiration rates indicate that sassafras may be adapted to tolerate the relatively dry and warm environment of old fields as well as to shaded pine plantations. Sassafras photosynthesizes efficiently under high plant water stress and at low light intensities. Forest Sci. 18:218-222.
