Abstract Exact expressions are given for the standard errors of the estimated basal area in plot and point sampling in certain model forests. The models are produced by a random mechanism involving an aggregation of stems in clusters. The high efficiency of point sampling in estimating basal area is confirmed from studying the standard error formulas. Additional cases, in which analytic expressions for the standard error can be found, are indicated. Forest Sci. 18:123-125.
