
Abstract Attention is drawn to the need for critical assessment of different methods of determining forest biomass using sample trees. Corrected data of forest biomass for a Scots pine plantation which had thinned itself naturally are compared with data for a natural stand of balsam fir. Differences tentatively attributed to variations in tolerance of the two species are shown to result mainly from differences in analytical treatment of the data.
