Abstract Measured loss of water from standard 1-gallon cans with friction lids has been used successfully to evaluate prescribed fires in the Intermountain West. Painted flat black, filled with 3 liters of water, and provided with a 1-centimeter vent hole, these cans are placed in areas to be burned. Water loss is measured after the fires to represent energy released.
