Abstract During the course of the past few years, the BCS Professional Development Scheme has become an accepted standard for documenting and validating training, experience acquisition and career development in IS, and as a route to acquiring recognised professional qualifications. There has been continuous, steady growth in the number of organisations operating PDS and, correspondingly, in the number of participants actively progressing through the scheme. The acceptance and use of PDS, and its associated standards in the BCS Industry Structure Model, has also expanded in a wide variety of other ways - there are now established overseas developments, links with other national and international standards, such as ISO9000 and National Vocational Qualifications, guidelines for those working in safety-related areas and usage of the ISM as a requirement for level of competence of responsibility. This article will bring you up to date with the various training and development initiatives the BCS is currently involved with, and how they tie in with PDS and the ISM.
