There are circumstances under which entomologists need precise knowledge about the levelof an insect population located in a given place and time (target population). There are, however, other circumstances under which precise knowledge of a target population is not needed. For these, a simple determination of whether the level of a target population is more or less than a given value, or threshold, is sufficient. Such “categorical” knowledge about the level of an insect population particularly is relevant to their management.
