Why quantum gravity?

Abstract

Abstract The main motivations for the need of constructing a theory of quantum gravity are presented. The chaper contains a discussion of the relevant scales (in particular, the Planck scale) and gives an overview of the experimental situation and the various approaches for quantizing gravity.
