Abstract

I am grateful to The Institute of Physics for the honour it does me in inviting me to participate in this meeting to celebrate the centenary of The Physical Society. Three years ago the Institution of Electrical Engineers celebrated its centenary by a similar congress when your President, Sir Brian Flowers, provided us with a most stimulating opening address.
