
In two recent reviews of this subject (Hartman, 1939; Marshall, 1942) this concept of the ovulatory cycle's being influenced by sexual stimuli arising from behavioral relations between the male and female (or sometimes between two females) has been extended to include the lower vertebrates. However, the evidence presented is rather meager. Regarding the teleosts, two publications are cited. First, in a paper by Hamlyn-Harris (1931), who studied the Australian trout gudgeon, Mogurnda (Mogurnda) adspersus, the statement is made that "oviposition does not take place, however, unless the male is sufficiently energetic in his attentions, which take the form of a constant display of nuptial colouring and, in addition, a tendency to 'knead' the body of the female with his mouth."
