The mafic ultrapotassic lavas of the Virunga igneous province of SW Uganda and adjacent regions are chemically much more similar to the unquestionably oceanic mafic magmas of Tristan da Cunha than has hitherto been recognized, which raises the possibility that both may arise from similar asthenospheric mantle sources.
