As a careful reading of the three papers by Howard, Stanley, and Soltis left me uncertain about what I had actually written, and whether the discussion had been advanced, I carefully reread my own paper, which I had not touched for a number of months. The question of how the responses advance the discussion will be addressed later; for now I would like to put the essential structure of the argument back in focus.
