Following exposure to 0.5 and 0.75 ppm SO2 fumigation for up to 2 wk, apparent photosynthesis was determined in Lemna minor, L. valdiviana, and Spirodela oligorhiza by infrared gas analysis at 300, 500, and 1,000 ppm CO2. Net photosynthesis was inhibited in L. valdiviana and S. oligorhiza but not in L. minor. The growth rate, as measured by frond count, was not affected in L. minor and L. valdiviana and only slightly in S. oligorhiza. Short-term CO2 enhancement appreciably increased the photosynthetic rates.
